Trailer and Minibus Tests

Car and Trailer (B +E)

We have been teaching people to tow for over 30 years (well before the changes in the law) and have a wealth of knowledge in this type of training and testing.

Do I need to take a test?

Passed your test after 1st January 1997 If you passed your Driving Test after the 1st January 1997 and wish to tow a trailer with a load capability in excess of 750kg you will need to take a further test, the B+E. You do not need to take a Theory Test.

Is the Driving Test easy?
No its not! You will have to answer questions about vehicle safety, trailer safety and loading. Be able to hitch and unhitch safely. On the road, you will have to display a high degree of driving ability and awareness. It is classed as a vocational (or professional) driving test. Because our training is so thorough and pupil-centred we have so far not had a single first-time failure.

How long does the training take?
It is actually a lot quicker than people think. It will depend on your current driving standard, whether or not you have had previous experience of manoeuvring a trailer and your response to tuition. One thing that is always recommended is to read the latest copy of the Highway Code before starting a course. Phone us now and we can discuss your requirements and suggest a course for you based on your experience if you have already got lots of trailer experience you would need a much shorter course than somebody with no experience.

Passed your test before 1st January 1997 If you passed your Driving Test before 1st January 1997 then you do not need to take another test. If however, you do not have any experience of towing, it would be a safe idea to have lessons on how to safely hitch and unhitch the trailer, how to safely manoeuvre understand the different dynamics of controlling a car and trailer, loading and all the other safety-related issues.

Minibus (D1) and Minibus and Trailer (D1 + E)

If you want to drive a vehicle with more than 9 seats you will need to pass the D1 test.

a.) If you passed your car test after 1st January 1997
b.) If you need to drive the vehicle as part of your work or are paid in any way to do so, then you will need to pass the D1 test. You will need to apply for a D1 provisional license, pass the medical and Theory Test for Buses and Coaches.
c.) If you want to tow a trailer capable of carrying 750kg or more, you will need to pass a further test to give you the D1+E.

As with any course we offer we would always encourage you to take a two hour assessment lesson so we can more accurately forecast the number of hours you will need to be successful.
